Formerly known as Bara Ringtong, Margaret's Hope gets its name from Lady Margaret, the youngest daughter of the garden manager Mr Cruikshank. Lady Margaret loved the garden and promised to return to it from England. But she died of a tropical disease on the way back from the garden and her hope remained unfulfilled. In order to erect a memorial stone for his daughter’s greatest wish, Mr Cruikshank changed the name of the estate from “Bara Rington” to “Margaret’s Hope”.

"Margaret's Hope Since 1864" painted in bold across the roof of the factory, the tea estate is one of the oldest and most reputable tea estates in Darjeeling. It is located at the northern part of Kurseong Valley, to the northwest of Goomtee and Jungpana estates. It has a tea salon called Margaret's Deck overlooking its tea estate stretching from 950 to1830 m and boosting a stunning panoramic view of the Kurseong Valley

This tea is FTGFOP 1 HS –  Finest/Fine Tippy Golden Flowery Orange Pekeo grade 1, meaning it is the finest picking possible, with a high proportion of tips. HS means Highest Standard, which is the highest grade of the estate.

The tea cultivar is AV2, which means Ambari Vegetative 2. The most popular cultivar grown in Darjeeling, it is also grown in other tea regions of India. Through a breeding program, this cultivar was first selected in 1960s at the Ambari Tea Estate. Proving to be a cultivar of outstanding flavour potential, clones were made for it for propagation to other tea estates. In Darjeeling lingo, such a tea is known as clonal tea. If the tea is specifically a clone of the original China bushes, it is marked by CL, meaning China Clone.

It is important to note that all estates today mark their highest grade tea with grade 1. In fact, SFTGFOP 1, SFTGFOP, FTGFOP 1, FTGFOP now all mean the same thing – the highest grade of the estate, and the varied nomenclature stems from the different naming or marketing traditions of the estates.

We used the Parchmen Tea Evaluation Set, at 3 gm to 100 ml (2/3 of cup), at 85°C filtered water for 30 seconds, repeated at 35 seconds. The first flush notes of fruits have transformed to a musky and spicy note, with hints of earth but still retaining some grape and stonefruit aromas from the first flush. An exceptional second flush tea different from the rest, it remains one of the most sought-after teas in Darjeeling.

We also included this tea in our Oct 2022 tea box. Read about it here.

Packed in loose in tea caddy.

3g to 100ml, 85°C, 30 sec
